Turner & Looch (with Special Guest Emily Moulder) - Episode 8

Soundtracks Special. (Warning: Contains industrial quantities of soundtrack-based nerdery).

This week we're joined by the lovely Emily Moulder, formerly of OnTheBox.com and now part of the MovieVortex team. Join us as we discuss the week's new releases (including Blue Valentine, Conviction, The Green Hornet and Henry's Cat Crime), have our minds BLOWN by some amazing Movie News, diss the Orange Rising Star nominations (sorry, Orange Rising Star nominations) and exclusively reveal our Top Ten Favourite Soundtracks. As does...um...previous special guest Vicki Isitt, who we apparently promised could join us for the Soundtracks Special. Whoops. Anyway, Vicki sent a list in too.

COMPETITION TIME! Astute listeners will notice that this week's podcast contains excerpts from a number of different soundtracks, all cleverly layered over the podcast using the magic of EDITING. If you can name every soundtrack used, in order, then you can win some very special* movie merchandise. Just email your entry in to turnerandlooch@gmail.com. All correct entries will win merchandise.

*specialness not guaranteed.

Index (m/s):

00:00 - 02:45 - Intro. This week's Turner & Looch comes to you live, from The Blue Posts, Rupert Street! Emily introduced. Emily's favourite episode of Turner & Looch revealed. Vicki apologised to, profusely. Announcement: Turner & Looch will soon be available on iTunes. Watch this space.

02:45 - 06:50 - Emily reviews Blue Valentine, since we've both reviewed it at least twice each on the LFF podcast and elsewhere. Blue Valentine revealed as everyone's Film of the Week. Number of seconds before Turner interrupts: 12. Number of seconds before Looch interrupts: 23. Discussion of Blue Valentine. My Good Friend Ryan Reynolds briefly confused with Ryan Gosling. Notebook effect noted. Shocking name-drop from Looch.

06:50 - 10:40 - Conviction discussed. Turner declares love for Minnie Driver, proposes marriage. Minnie's response eagerly awaited.

10:40 - 20:50 - The Green Hornet discussed. Looch revealed to have seen Green Hornet in both Ds (but is only allowed to discuss one of them). Amusing high-pitch voice moment. Looch overcomes Rogen indifference, at least temporarily. Cameron Diaz ruminated upon. 3D scenes discussed. Turner revealed as obsessive credits-watcher; Looch revealed as obsessive credits-ignorer.

20:50 - 27:11 - Henry's Cat Crime discussed. Plot explained to Emily, who hadn't seen it. Keanu jokes busted out. James Caan "in full-on twinkly old bastard mode". Vera Farmiga praised. Flaw in film noted. Lack of promotion / publicity for Henry's Cat Crime speculated upon. Practice of "going in cold" discussed (benefits of professional film reviewing).

27:11 - 28:00 - Argument over inclusion of remaining three films of the week. Remaining three films of the week briefly listed. Although one of them is actually out the week after. Remaining three films of the week: Travellers (rubbish), Brotherhood (good, though hadn't seen at time of podcast) and Ride, Rise, Roar (also good, but out next week).

28:00 - 35:25 - MOVIE NEWS. Enormous box office success of The King's Speech discussed. Orange Risen Rising Star nominations revealed (and dissed). Emily voices OUTRAGE that Tamsin Grieg not on BAFTA longlist for Tamara Drewe. Previous Orange nominees discussed. "Text vote" motives questioned. Hobbit cast members confirmed.

35:25 - 37:32 - SOUNDTRACK SPECIAL. Rules laid out (i.e. we chose our favourites, not the best; themes left aside, which accounts for general lack of John Williams; "soundtracks" here includes both original scores and soundtrack albums made up of songs). Vicki apologised to again. Difficulty (or lack of difficulty) in choosing ten soundtracks revealed.

37:32 - 41:07 - Vicki Isitt's Top Ten Soundtracks revealed (on a list read out by Looch). Crossover with Looch's list occurs but is kept secret. Vicki's list causes Turner to revise his own list, mid-reading. The phrase "If we'd done a top twenty, that would have been on mine too" occurs.

41:07 - 46:20 - Emily's Top Ten Soundtracks revealed. Crossover with Vicki's list revealed. (Note: the audible "ding" noise is the dumb waiter at the Blue Posts. Sorry about that.) Unexpected number of soundtracks from the same composer revealed. Emily uses the word "fantastic" a lot. Emily's Guilty Pleasure soundtrack revealed. Emily challenged to hum an excerpt from one of her choices. Some EDITING occurs.

46:20 - 49:46 - Turner's Top Ten Soundtracks revealed. Connection between soundtracks and all-time favourite films touched upon. Turner's Guilty Pleasure revealed (and shared with Mark Kermode, apparently).

49:46 - 55:20 - Looch's Top Ten Soundtracks revealed. Crossover with Vicki's list revealed. Pay attention to this bit (53:20), as it is IMPORTANT FOR LATER. Looch's love of soundtracks surprises no-one.

55:20 - Matters arising from soundtrack lists. Some extra choices slip in. Brilliantly scored scenes in films briefly touched upon. Brief Phil-Mitchell-on-crack reference.

57:13 - 60:50 - Why Emily Hates Time Travel Movies. Time After Time recommended (even if you hate time travel movies as much as Emily does).

59:17 - 60:50 - Outro. Surprise guest appearance by Richard Burton.

14:14 - 21:11 - Burlesque reviewed. SOMEONE revealed to have included Burlesque in their Top Ten Films of 2010. "IT'S NOT BURLESQUE!" Argument about what "burlesque" actually means. Cassam actually wrong for once. Proof: Cassam = wrong. Karaoke challenge laid down. "There's ballet dancers complaining about Black Swan..."

(Fantasy casting of Bethany Cabe = Christina Hendricks). Captain America and Green Lantern movies speculated upon. Thor's chances pondered. Inevitable guesswork about the Avengers movie. Good Kenneth Branagh story from MovieCon. Green Hornet NOT discussed, because of embargos (and the fact that one of us hasn't seen it).

47:00 - 54:54 - Discussion of films we're looking forward to in 2011. Tree of Life trailer eulogised. Basically: CAN. NOT. WAIT. To see Blue Valentine twice or not to see Blue Valentine twice? MovieVortex plugged. Transformers 3 dreaded. Reactions to Pirates 4 trailer. Cassam's controversial theory that Pixar are "finished". Pixar slate discussed.

54:54 - 57:25 - Rang-go vs Range-o. "It's Rango because it rhymes with Django". Also: Sucker Punch, Superman, etc. Theories about how best to make a Superman film. Cassam, shockingly, declares himself "done with Superman".

57:25 - 58:00 - Outro.
